There are many companies out there that are developing new programs all the time. Even as I type this right now, you can be sure that out there (probably in India given the time that I am writing this) there are a team of coders working towards the development of an application that will plug into technology that I already have. For most of you reading this, that means things like your iphone. The amount of plug-ins for the iphone is now quite astonishing, and even more surprising than that is the quality of these applications. I found one the other day that you could plug a website into and it would instantly break it down and give you a full report of its structure, how trusted it was, and how much the search engines like Google like it! Technology is moving forward, and it is exciting. I’d like to talk about Enigin for a moment, and the stuff that they are currently developing.
Enigin are an energy saving company that for over a decade have been working commercially to reduce people’s emissions. Now this is an important point because it affects how they develop their applications – they have been work commercially to reduce energy. They save people money. What this means is that they are not an environmental group, but a money making company the same as apple mac. Now why is it that apple are successful? Is it because they come up with great ideas for applications? Yes in part, but it is also because they are a money driven business. They produce their products with the customer in mind, and their coders work quickly and efficiently because there is a limited budget and they get paid for being good. Engin work just like apple in this way, and so it is that they are producing some very exciting interfaces right now, and because they are a commercial company they will very likely be able to deliver on these, and I can’t wait!
Already Enigin do a strong line in a thing called the eniscope. Basically this thing plugs into your syetem and tells you exactly how much electricity everything is using. Think about how useful this is. Every wondered how much energy your computer is using? Well now you can know for a fact. Every wondered exactly how much money you are spending on leaving your main servers running over night? Well Enigin can tell you.
They are taking it further though with something that really takes my imagination. They are currently developing an energy monitor with a live feed that goes directly to a large TOUGHSCREAN LCD screen! It will tell you exactly what electricity is being used live and up to the minute, and if you want to, you can then use the touch screen to zoom into different parts of the building so you can really see exactly what is being used where.
The whole thing is based on the enigin eniscope, but the entire interface and data filtering is completely new. This really really excited me! How amazing would it be to have one of those in your workplace, or even better your home. I’m not sure it is going to be affordable for home use, but it would be a great teaching method in things like schools where the kids could become more energy aware. Stick a transmitter on it that then syncronises to your iphone, and you can see what the Science lab is using in energy whilst you are bored in maths class!
I hope Enigin finish it off soon, and when they do I’ll put a link here to wherever you can buy the thing from for any of you that want one. Watch this space!

Finish it off! I want to play!!!

Update 30/11/09
I have been absolutely delinquent in updating this Enigin page, I looked at the date of it this morning and realized that I haven’t touched it for a month and a half. But what can I say? I’ve been insanely busy but promise to update you with new and exciting Enigin information on a weekly basis from this point onwards. This came up because I have just downloaded a new app on my iPhone that lets me direct all of my favourite newsfeeds to my inbox and so I can read them on my daily commute. I know that I should have had this quite a long time ago but I was getting a little obsessive with playing retro video games on my phone on the tube (wolfinstein, for example). Anyways, the point is that an Enigin press release came into my inbox through the EarthTimes feed, and it reignited my interest in this company. So watch this space for more news and updates!
